I'll Tell Me Ma

This Irish children's folk song is great for:

  • Singing while jumping a skipping rope to feel the beat in 2/4 metre.
  • Teaching the rhythmic element 'tim-ka' (dotted quaver, semiquaver / dotted eighth note, sixteenth note).
  • Interval recognition and in-tune singing practice! Can your students find the perfect 4th, perfect 5th and perfect octave!

Note: there is some debate as to whether the girl in the song is from Belfast city or Dublin city. Indeed the name of the city is commonly changed depending on where the song is being sung! An English version of the song simply uses 'Golden City' which takes away the whole debate - though children do connect more when singing the name of a city they know.
